Crews are replacing aging wooden boardwalks at Grayce K. Barck North Beach Community Park in New Smyrna Beach with recycled composite decking.“The wood boardwalk … has been aging for a while,” said New Smyrna Beach Public Information Officer Phillip Veski. He said the old boards had problems with “wood rot, splintering,” and the new material should help reduce splinters and stay cooler in summer weather. The decking is made from recycled materials and is expected to last longer and require less maintenance. “Easier for the residents, easier for the city. It’s a win-win,” Veski said. The boardwalks connect North Atlantic Avenue and the east parking lot to the park’s two covered picnic pavilions. Work began on Monday and is expected to take about two weeks. Beach access via the dune walkover will remain open during construction.
